Job brief

The Captain will perform the daily vessel operations of Art & Water Taxi’s seasonal water taxi business on the Toronto waterfront. The Captain is the Master of the vessel under law and will comport themselves in a professional and friendly manner.

The specific duties of the Captain include: vessel operations, controlling passenger flows, assisting passengers in distress, securing the property of Art & Water Taxi.

Responsibilities

  • With reference to the Art & Water Taxi Vessel Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensure all vessel operations are carried out in a safe, appropriate, cost-effective way

  • Embark/disembark passengers and cargo onto/off of Art & Water Taxi vessels, when no Dock Staff are present, such as island-side dock locations

  • Participate in all training including the performance of regularly scheduled emergency drills and any other training required by management

  • Maintain a tidy and well organised vessel 

  • Ensure the security of all Art & Water Taxi property

Reporting

The Captain reports to the Operations Manager of Art & Water Taxi. Daily work functions are supervised by the Dockmaster/Manager-on-Duty  on shift.

Requirements and skills

  • Proven work experience as a small commercial vessel Captain or similar role

  • Polite and considerate demeanour, able to speak with authority when required

  • Able to function as a member of a team

  • Excellent communication skills in English. Proficiency in other languages is considered an asset

  • Timekeeping

  • Displays initiative and takes responsibility

  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs (21 kg)

  • Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time

  • Must be able to work regardless of weather conditions

  • Transport Canada Small Commercial Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Small Domestic Vessel-Basic Safety (SDV-BS) certification; Industry Canada Restricted Operator’s  Certificate-Marine (ROC-M), Marine Basic First Aid (including CPR) as a minimum standard.
